Destination Montville! A day trip through the Noosa Hinterland is an unforgettable experience. The road rises through the hills beyond Nambour, leaving the suburbs behind and entering into gorgeous green farmland with quaint cottages and magnificent homes clinging to the hill side. Almost every corner presents a panoramic view of the coast line stretching from Noosa to Caloundra. Art Galleries, B & B’s, Restaurants, Cafes and Antique Shops dot the roadside until you reach the village of Montville – a pretty township set amongst towering trees providing an amazing shopping experience. Take a stroll down one side of the street and back up the other, sample the hand made sweets or spend some time in the Cuckoo Clock shop. Visit the Christmas store – get some great ideas for your next festive celebration – maybe you’ll find the perfect gift to give on the day too! So many lovely eating places to choose from or spend some time in the beautiful beer garden at the Montville hotel.

The Hinterland region has many gorgeous picnic spots and scenic lookouts to visit. Mary Cairncross Park provides the best vantage point for the incredible Glasshouse Mountains. Rainforest walks with informative panels along the way guide you through the history of the area. Plan a bbq at one of the magnificent waterfalls or crystal clear swimming holes – a great place to laze the day away in the warmer months. The children will be occupied for hours, climbing trees and exploring the rockpools! Why not make it a full day trip, leave early and visit the Eumundi Markets on the way…..

Discover the Noosa North Shore

If you don’t like crowded beaches, put your car on the ferry and head across the river to the Noosa North Shore. This pristine wilderness area extends from the Noosa River mouth for 80 kms to the lighthouse at Double Island Point. There are many activities on offer – book a trail ride at the world class Equestrian Centre and explore the bush and beach on horseback, or try a camel trek for a more unique experience. Take your beach rod – great fun and good catches when the Taylor are running. The Sunshine Coast Hang Gliding Club use a cliff platform half way up the beach to launch their flights – always a thrill to watch. Surf to your hearts content without anyone dropping in on you, just pick a spot. Watch the migrating whales leap and spout just 100 metres from the sand, dolphins and turtles pass by and try to catch a glimpse of the elusive black dingo.

If you intend staying for a few days, there are several accommodation choices. If you do not have a four wheel drive, stay at the Noosa North Shore Resort or one of two caravan/camping grounds serviced by sealed roads with all amenities and easy beach access. If you have a four wheel drive, you can rent a great beach house in Teewah, drive up the sandy highway to the Freshwater camp ground offering facilities such as toilets, showers and fresh water but for the best experience, take a tent and set up in the sand dunes, light a camp fire and enjoy the sound of the waves crashing on the shore. A visit to Double Island Point and a walk to the lighthouse is a must. The headland has a good right hand break popular with surfers and lots of rocks on the waterline, ideal for spear fishing or snorkeling. As you climb the hill toward the lighthouse, you can see for miles down the beach and lots of sea life in the crystal clear water.

A four wheel drive access road, the Leisha track, cuts through rainforest sections across the range just before Double Island Point and brings you to the southern end of Rainbow Beach. The difference from one side of the point to the other is astounding. You will encounter a quiet bay full of sailing craft and fisherman as opposed to the rolling surf on the other side. Driving north, you will pass the Murrawar Lookout with spectacular views and the Carlow Sandblow, a moonscape sand mass overlooking the beautiful colored sands. The little coastal township of Rainbow Beach is a great place for lunch and services the popular family camping spot, Inskip Point. The Ferry to Fraser Island leaves from the beach here daily.

Surfing in Noosa

As you enter the Sunshine Coast you start to notice surfboards – all shapes and sizes, and that’s probably the best way to describe those that ride them too! At any hour of the day you will see the big Mal’s sliding across the swell at the points in Laguna Bay….the more experienced “Hanging 10” and beginners just hanging on! If you’ve never surfed before, Noosa is a great place to learn with plenty of empty stretches of beach perfect for practice. If you want to get a bit of an edge, book in to one of our Surf Schools for a lesson. No waves? No problem – hire a paddle board instead!

Noosa Walking Trails

Some tourists travel thousands of kilometres and come home with only pictures of themselves standing by the hotel pool – but Noosa is a holiday photographers dream! No matter where you stay in the area, there are roads and paths that will lead to somewhere beautiful. Did you know that there is now a National Walking Trail stretching from Noosa all the way to Cairns? It would take about two months to walk it of course, so for those on a short holiday we suggest a brisk morning stroll through the National Park to Alexandria Bay. You will encounter so many postcard moments – the beauty almost seems staged! Crystal clear water, dolphins and sea turtles, smooth round boulders, rock pools and at the very end of the track the sea rolling and heaving against the jagged cliff walls at Hells Gate. You can sit here all day and watch the changing scene below – it’s also the perfect vantage point for whale spotting – take a picnic and stay a while, or reward your effort when you return with a long, lazy lunch in Hastings Street…..you won’t even know what the hotel pool looked like!

From where I’m standing, the Noosa River looks like a shiny glass highway leading from the Everglades to the Sea.

If I only had one day to explore, which way would I go! The day is breaking and the sky is all pink and golden. It’s chilly but the steam from my coffee is keeping me warm as I watch the endless procession of rowers, fisherman, dog walkers – it’s peak hour here! As the sun rises and the café staff arrive, the smells of bacon and toast invite you to breakfast – so many venues to choose from! And if you’re trying to avoid early rising while relaxing on holidays – there is always brunch! The pancakes at Vanilla Café are to die for!

June Long Weekend

It’s Day One of the June long weekend – the sky is blue and the sun is out. From our desk we watch all types of people doing the “Hastings Street Shuffle”

- wandering past at a leisurely pace, enjoying the window displays – no one is rushing, everyone is happy. The temperature is 19 degrees outside, but if you had to guess by how people are dressed you could never tell! There are jumpers, jackets, scarves and boots then two girls fly by on skateboards in bikinis! Mid afternoon it seems everyone is eating ice cream and the Whip Bird in the big tree outside Aroma’s starts his song – he is so regular and so clear, we swear it is a recording! We are guaranteed to see a wedding party soon – and as the street becomes dark and the lights turn on, bare feet vanish and high heels clatter past followed by wafts of strong perfume. The bars and restaurants start to fill and the nightlife begins. Holidays in Noosa – I want one!
